New Growth

This Week, on Plant Tip Tuesday...

New Year, new growth! We're talking about what new growth can tell you about your plant's health.

There is nothing more exciting than seeing a new leaf on your plant! New growth will often emerge lighter and smaller than mature foliage, which is totally natural. Depending on the variety of plant, you may see new growth frequently or just every once in a while.

Here are some common issues that can show up in the new growth:

  • Insect Damage - this can appear as abnormally pale or distorted growth. Some insects like aphids and spider mites love to feast on the tender new growth.
  • Watering Issues - Inconsistent watering can cause the new growth to drop before it is able to mature or emerge brown or have brown fungal or bacterial spotting.
  • Insufficient Light - This can cause growth to come in pale, brown or just fall off.

Your best bet for plants to product healthy new growth is regular plant maintenance, such as smaller consistent watering, proper light location, and practicing Integrated Pest Management (IPM).

Happy New Year!
