This week, for Plant Tip Tuesday…
If you love plants but have limited light because you:
- live in a basement suite
- have a north-facing window
- have large trees that create shade in front of your home
- are in an office with little to no light
...let us point you in the direction of our low-light plants!
Some of our favourite varieties include:
- Sansevieria
- ZZ plants
- Dracaena
- Spider Plants
- Golden Pothos
- Philodendron Cordatum
- Peace Lily
- Cast Iron plant
- Aglaonema
Things to keep in mind with plants being kept in low light:
-
Plants that get less light require less fertilizer; once in the spring and once in the early fall should suffice
-
Plants that get less light are more prone to being overwatered; consistency is still important, but giving smaller volumes of water at a time, and ensuring the soil is truly ready to be watered is important
-
Don’t skip soil aeration! Allowing oxygen to flow to the roots helps to prevent bacterial and fungal issues related to overwatering.
-
Although there are plants that tolerate low light, they ultimately thrive best and grow more prolifically in bright filtered light locations, Consider cycling your low light tolerant plants through the low-light locations, or supplementing lighting with a UV grow light.
